Originally made in 1830 as a necklace, this tiara is owned by the Queen Mother, one of the many items Queen Victoria left to the Crown in her will. When the then-Princess Elizabeth married Prince Philip, The Queen Mum loaned it to her daughter as 'something borrowed'. She repeated the gesture and gave it to her granddaughter Anne to wear on her wedding day to Capt. Mark Phillips.

Also known as the Russian Fringe tiara, this was a silver wedding anniversary gift on behalf of 365 peeresses of the United Kingdom. The then-Princess Alexandra, known as Alix, had specifically requested that it be of the fashionable Russian style of a peasant girl's headdress. It was inspired by her sister, The Empress of Russia, who had an identical one. It was made by Garrard, with 61 platinum bars graduating from the center and set with 488 diamonds. Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth II favored this tiara at many a royal occasion.

The Diamond Group
Diamonds are the hardest substance on earth. They are more brilliant than any other natural gem. They have a brilliant luster, and also exhibit dazzling color flashes known as "fire". This is caused by dispersion, where light enters the diamond and splits into the colors of the spectrum. Only 20 percent of mined diamonds are used in jewelry, as most are unsuitable. The four Cs of diamond evaluation are: Color, Cut, Clarity and Carat Weight. Also known as "a girl's best friend." Its name derives from the Greek word adamas, which means 'invincible'. Although it is the hardest natural substance on earth, if it is placed in an oven and the temperature is raised to about 763°C (1405°F), it will simply vanish, without even ash remaining. Only a little carbon dioxide will have been released. Diamonds are a form of carbon--remember how Superman was too cheap to buy Lois Lane a diamond, so he squeeze a lump of coal in his hand until it turned into a diamond! Birthstone for April Lore: The diamond has always been linked to love, fidelity, and faithfulness and is considered a protection against poisons and plagues.

The Emerald Group
Emerald is the green variety of the mineral beryl. Emeralds are notorious for their flaws. Flawless stones are very uncommon, and are noted for their great value. Some people actually prefer an emerald with very minute flaws over a flawless emerald, as this proves authenticity of the stone. Many emerald flaws can be hidden by treating the emeralds with oil. Emeralds may develop internal cracks if banged hard or if subject to extreme temperature change. Birthstone for May Lore: The emerald enhances love, brings eloquence, gaiety, & popularity. Brings strength, especially in old age, and restores eyesight. Enhances courage in times of trial and emotional distresses.

The Amethyst Group
Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz. The name is derived from the Greek word 'amethystos', which means 'against drunkenness'. The color purple is traditionally the color of royalty and amethyst has been used since the dawn of history to adorn the rich and powerful monarchs and rulers. Amethyst can occur as long prismatic crystals that have a six sided pyramid at either end or can form crystalline crusts that only show the pointed ends. It is found in geodes and alluvial deposits all around the world and occurs in crystalline or massive form. It is the presence of manganese in clear quartz which produces amethyst. The amount of iron in the specimen is responsible for the depth of purple. Almost all Amethyst on the market today is heat-treated to achieve its best color. Birthstone for February Lore: Physical and mental healer; aids in creativity, spirituality, intuition. Stimulates purity and love, prevents drunkenness.

The
Opal Group
Opal is the most colorful of all gems. Its splendid play of color is unsurpassed, and fine examples can be more valuable than a diamond. A condition called crazing affects certain opals, causing them to form internal cracks. Crazing is a particularly interesting phenomenon, for it lacks consistency and is unpredictable. Although it can occur at random, it usually strikes when an opal removed from damp conditions is allowed to dry too quickly, or when an opal is exposed to sudden intense light -- or a combination of these factors. Crazing may also take place when an opal is subject to vibration, as during the cutting and polishing procedure. Unlike other gemstones, the opal is non-crystalline and is formed from a hardened silica gel. Birthstone for October Lore: It was believed to give wealth and beauty and enable the wearer to become invisible. Unlucky if it becomes milky or if the wearer was not born in the month of October. Milky opals are thought to bring sadness and depression.

The
Ruby Group
Ruby is distinguished and known by all for its fiery red color. Beside for its color, it is a most desirable gem due to its hardness, durability, luster, and rarity. Transparent rubies of large sizes are even rarer than diamonds. Transparent, flawless rubies exceed all other gems in value, except for deeply colored fancy diamonds. It is a red variety of the mineral corundum, so in essence, the ruby is really a red sapphire. Ruby is a tough and durable gem, but it is still subject to chipping and fracture if handled roughly. Rubies were first synthesized in 1902. Many rubies on the market are synthetic. Only experts can distinguish between natural and synthetic rubies. Birthstone for July Lore: The Ruby denotes passion, courage, loyalty and charity. If it changes color on the wearer, it is a warning of misfortune or unhappiness. Rubies were thought to counteract poison. Rubbed on the skin, Rubies were once thought to restore youth and vitality.
