The
Midas Group
Midas was the king of Pessinus and was well known for his pristine rose garden and love of the pleasures of life.
One day, a satyr (half human, half goat) named Silenus became intoxicated and passed out in Midas' rose garden. The peasants found him and brought him before their king. Luckily, Midas recognized Silenus and treated him well.
Silenus was the surrogate father to Dionysus, god of the life force. The grateful
Dionysus offered to grant Midas one wish. Midas wished that everything he touched be turned to
gold, even though he was warned about the dangers of such a wish. Initially, King Midas was thrilled with his new gift and turned everything he could to gold, including his beloved roses.
His attitude changed, however, when he was unable to eat or drink since his food and wine were also changed to unappetizing gold. He even accidentally killed his daughter when he touched her, and this truly made him realize the depth of his mistake.
(The old, be careful what you wish for...)

The
Echo & Narcissus Group
One of the most famous of the nymphs was Echo. Zeus had many extramarital affairs and gave Echo the job of distracting his wife Hera by keeping her busy listening to Echo's idle chatter while Zeus was carrying on. Hera eventually discovered Echo's little ruse and punished Echo by declaring that she would never speak again except to repeat the sounds that she heard. Sometime later Echo saw the beautiful youth Narcissus and fell deeply in love with him, but she could not speak to him unless she was spoken to. When they finally met, Narcissus rejected her quite insensitively and nastily. Echo hid her shame in the woods and in the caves, wasting away until nothing was left, except her voice.
Narcissus was punished for scorning Echo by the goddess Nemesis who decided he should know what it feels like to love someone deeply and not have that love returned. When Narcissus saw his own reflection in a clear pool, he became so
enamored of it, that he could not leave it. He pined away and eventually became a flower which bears his name.

Round 2 is here
The
Tantalus Group
Tantalus, the king of Sipylos, was the son of Zeus and the nymph Plouto.
He was uniquely favored among mortals since he was invited to share the food of the
gods at Zeus' table in Olympus. However, he abused the guest-host relationship
by stealing nectar and ambrosia, bringing them back to his people, and revealing the secrets of the gods.
He was punished by being "tantalized" with hunger and thirst in Tartarus. There he was immersed up to his neck in water, but when he bent to drink, it all drained
away. Luscious fruit hung on trees above him, but when he reached for it the winds blew the branches beyond his reach.

The
Sisyphus Group
Sisyphus is the founder of Corinth and the son of Aeolus (the king of Thessaly) and Enarete. He
was most known for instituting the Isthmian Games. According to tradition he was sly and evil and used to way-lay travelers and murder them. He betrayed the secrets of the gods and
captured and chained the god of death, Thanatos, so that the deceased could not reach the underworld. Hades himself intervened and Sisyphus was severely
punished: In the realm of the dead, he is forced to roll a block of stone against a steep hill, which tumbles back down when he reaches the top. Then the whole process starts again, lasting all eternity. His punishment was depicted on many Greek vases.

The
Pandora Group
In Greek mythology, Pandora was the first woman, fashioned by Zeus as part of his punishment of mankind for having stolen the secret of fire.
Zeus is enraged and has Pandora made as a poisoned gift for man. The gods endowed her with many talents: beauty, music,
healing, etc. Hermes gives Pandora a box (or a jar) and tells her never to open it; then he gives her
the gift of curiosity. (Her name means "all-gifted"). After Prometheus stole fire from heaven, Zeus took vengeance by presenting Pandora to
his brother Epimetheus, who immediately fell in love and married her. Impelled by her natural
curiosity, Pandora eventually opened the box, and all evil contained in it
escapes and spreads over the earth. She hastened to close the lid, but the whole contents of the jar had
already escaped, except for one thing which lay at the bottom, Elpis, Goddess of Hope.
So the world becomes extremely bleak until Pandora opens the jar again, and Hope then flutters out. Thus mankind always has hope in times of
evil.

The
Eris Group
Eris is the Greek goddess of discord and strife. She is sinister and mean, and her greatest joy is to make trouble.
Zeus was preparing a wedding banquet for Peleus and Thetis and he didn't want to invite Eris because of
her reputation as a trouble maker. The angered Eris, who owns the golden
"Apple of Discord," so she inscribed KALLISTI ("to the Prettiest
One") on it. During the Banquet, she rolled the apple into the hall. Athena, Hera and Aphrodite each claimed the apple belonged to herself because of the inscription. The banquet turned into a
brawl and was ruined. A shepherd from Troy named Paris was appointed to end the
argument and he picked Aphrodite after she bribed him by promising him the Most Beautiful Woman on Earth.
That happened to be Helen, wife of Menelaus, the King of Sparta, who became so
upset that he declared war on Troy. The Trojan War ensued and lasted for years.
