Taklamakan DesertThe Gobi Group

The Gobi desert is the fifth largest desert area in the world and covers much of the southern part of Mongolia.  It is one of the most hostile deserts, with temperatures as low as -40° F in the winter and as high as 113° F in the summer. The word Gobi means "waterless place". Unlike the Sahara there are few sand dunes in the Gobi. It contains the last remaining wild Bacterian (two-humped) camels, and a small population of Gobi bears, the only desert-inhabiting bear.

The Sahara Group

The Sahara desert is the largest in the world. It  covers almost the entire northern quarter of the African continent, roughly the size of the US. In the west, the Sahara is rocky with varied elevation. It contains underground rivers, which result in oases. The central region of the Sahara has more elevation than the other areas. Even though the area lacks rainfall, peaks found in this area are snowcapped during the winter. The Eastern part of the Sahara is dry with very few oases.  Sahara means "desert" so to say the "Sahara Desert" is a bit redundant.

The Saguaro Group

The Saguaro seems to serve only two important functions- to entertain and cheer the desert traveler, and to furnish high places for the nests of woodpeckers.

   The Barrel Cactus Group

Don't go for those tall stories about lopping off its golden head and finding water-- the cost in energy outweighs the yield. Besides, the living barrel is more useful as a compass- it leans to the south.

The Prickly Pair Group

Prickly Pear Cactus produce both nopales, a vegetable, and tuna, a fruit. As a vegetable, Nopales can be used in salads, casseroles, soups, grilled and prepared in a variety of other ways. Nopales are somewhat tart and have a green bean- or asparagus -like flavor. Medicinal purposes include treatment for earaches, hemorrhoids, snake and insect bites, as well as for sunburn.

 The Agave Group

The pulp of the heart of the Agave is used to treat chapped lips, rashes, sunburn and snow blindness (in case it snows in the desert?). Made into a compress, it relieves congestion. Eaten raw, it induces vomiting, in case you accidentally ate another ineatible cactus.

The Yucca Group

Yucca is a variety of cactus that many of us are familiar with. Dandruff and associated hair and scalp problems are effectively treated by making a shampoo of the root of many varieties of Yucca. The young shoots of Yucca serve as a pain reliever when mashed and boiled.
